Don’t like to read or not reading enough? This should motivate you!
If you read 30-60 minutes each day, this will add up to about one book per week. The average person reads less than one book per year. If you read one book per week, this will add up to about 50 books each year. As it happens, to earn a Ph.D. from a major university requires the reading and synthesis into a dissertation of about 40 to 50 books.
If you were to read one book per week, 50 books per year, you would be getting the equivalent of a practical PhD in your field each year.
If you continued reading at this level, 50 books per year, you would read 500 books in the next 10 years. If you were to read 500 books in your field, in a world where the average person reads less than one book per year, do you think that this might give you an edge? You bet!
So next time when you will be deciding between flipping between TV channels and reading the book, you may choose the later. Because reading a good book is an investment in the most important person in the world – you.
Finally, here are some tips on reading from Jim Rohn:
- “Miss a meal if you have to, but don’t miss a book.”
- “Some people claim that it is okay to read trashy novels because sometimes you can find something valuable in them. You can also find a crust of bread in a garbage can, if you search long enough, but there is a better way.”
- “Most homes valued at over $250,000 have a library. That should tell us something.”
- “Everything you need for your better future and success has already been written. And guess what? It’s all available. All you have to do is go to the library. But would you believe that only three percent of the people in America have a library card. Wow, they must be expensive! No, they’re free. And there’s probably a library in every neighborhood. Only three percent!”
- “I now have one of the better libraries. I admit that I haven’t read everything in my library, but I feel smarter just walking in it.”
- “Don’t just read the easy stuff. You may be entertained by it, but you will never grow from it.”
- “The book you don’t read won’t help.”
- “Books are easy to find and easy to buy. A paperback these days only costs six or seven dollars. You can borrow that from your kids!”
- “It isn’t what the book costs; it’s what it will cost if you don’t read it.”
